The counting of votes shows a clear groundswell for the Maoists across the country except in the central Tarai where Madhesi regional parties are also doing well.
All the top Maoist leaders have been elected to the Constituent Assembly, defeating their contenders with huge margins, irrespective of the constituencies they contested.
Maoist Chairman Prachanda defeated NC’s Rajendra KC with a margin of 11,123 votes in Kathmandu-10. Prachanda bagged 23,277 votes against KC’s 12,154.
The Maoist second-in-command Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai, who is a candidate from Gorkha-2, was leading vote count with a huge margin of over 30,000 votes till midnight. His nearest rival is Chandra Prasad Neupane.
Maoist spokesman and Minister for Information Krishna Bahadur Mahara won with 20,492 votes against his contender NC candidate Anita Devkota’s 10,671. Maoist leader Pampha Bhushal defeated UML’s Raghuji Pant by a margin of 8,298.
Maoists’ senior leader Ram Bahadur Thapa “Badal” defeated NC’s Ek Nath Rana Bhat with a huge margin.
But senior UML and NC leaders lost the elections. CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Nepal was defeated by the Maoist candidate in Kathmandu-2 and NC’s acting president Sushil Koirala was defeated by Madhesi People’s Right Forum (MPRF)candidate Sarva Dev Ojha in Banke-3.
The Maoists have stormed into the UML’s erstwhile bastion of Kathmandu Valley, winning a majority of the seats here. But the Maoists have also made inroads into the NC’s traditional strongholds — Tanahun, Chitwan, Kailali, Banke and Kanchanpur districts.
Kathmandu Valley has elected all new faces to its 15 seats except Narayan Man Bijukchhe in Bhaktapur-1. Bijukchhe’s Nepal Workers Peasants Party (NWPP) was able not only to retain its control over its traditional stronghold but also win Bhaktapur-2, which was won by the NC twice in the past three parliamentary polls. Sunil Prajapati of NWPP defeated the NC candidate there.
In about a dozen seats in the Tarai from Morang in the east to Banke in the west, the MPRF is in a leading position. In Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s home district of Morang, MPRF candidates were in leading positions as of late night Saturday. (The Kathmandu Post)
