Last week I was in hills. The one question is hitting me a lot, will Darjeeling BURN (BORN) again? The fight of GJMM as some say is for the chair, some say is purposeless. GJMM’s demand is 6th schedule which proposes to grant tribal status to hill people should be abolished as it will not benefit the hill people. Secondly care taker administrator Mr. Subash Ghishing should be removed from the position he is holding at present.
In the past 21 years after DGHC (Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council) is formed , the issues of Governance, issues of Development is seen very weak. In the past 21 years GNLF (Gorkha National Liberation Front) has taken Darjeeling more than 20 years back. Bal Krishna Sam (poet) had said “What Darjeeling thinks today, Nepal will think tomorrow.” Just the opposite is happening today. The governance of Ghisingh is poor. He is a one man show leader or like Rambo (One man army). The development is almost nil in the hills. In the name of development the natural resources has been damaged by digging unnecessary roads which are still incomplete. In the name of development religious statues are installed wherever they found the place. The educated youths have migrated and still migrating. In the name of giving employment educated youths are given jobs in pennies. Infrastructure development is one of the basic requirements for the progress but no such development can be seen. The hill produces lot of fruits (orange, passion fruits), ginger, and cardamom. But where is the place for its market and storage. The farmers get scanty from these produce. Not a single leader thought of storage. When Sikkim can run juice factory why Darjeeling could not do so?
The voices of people led by GJMM are heard asking Gorkhaland. But I am skeptic about it. The way they are moving will not take them to their destination. The agitation cannot achieve better result with muscle power. There is no scarcity of think tank in the hills. GJMM should walk with them. Simply shouting slogan will not bring Gorkhaland. There are different aspects for achieving it. Will Gorkhaland be achieved on the issues of tribe/ race (jati), governance, Development? What does the Indian constitution say about it? How did Jharkhand, Uttaracnchal got their statehood? How Bidharba and Telangana fighting for the statehood? GJMM should study them. GJMM is seen weak in PR, whether it is the support from the National parties or the coverage in the National media. No national media has covered the show nor has any national party openly come up with any comment on the issue.
Bimal Gurung must do his homework and proper strategy should be taken. Beware Ghishing is silent now and silence can kill.
Will Darjeeling Burn or Born again?
